Most kids these days are into Kendrick Lamar or Chain Smokers, not playing Mariachi music. Their songs are catchy and the beats are pretty fly, however, do you suspect any of those songs will have the longevity, value, or life meaning that Mariachi music has? Do you expect in 10 years from now you’ll be listening to what will be termed old school hip-hop and still dig on Kendrick’s rhymes? Probably not, but your mother will still be singing ‘Las Mañanitas’ to you on your birthday years after you’ve grown up and moved out of the house.
In April of this year seven of our Advanced students were given the amazing opportunity of attending the International Mariachi Conference in Tucson AZ. They had three days of full immersion into Mariachi music attending various sessions where they learned how to play new songs, did voice work, and stepped up their playing skills based on their instrument. Talk about #thatmariachilife ! Our kids heads were spinning by the time the conference was over. They didn’t know what they were getting themselves into before they got there. They just knew there would be other students like them from across the country and around the globe. They didn’t think they were going to get what they got: Community, Appreciation, Love.
Music does amazing things to people. Our student left that conference on a musical high. A Mariachi high. They couldn’t wait to get back to tell their friends in the group about their trip and show them what they learned. These seven students have memories of an experience of a lifetime that won’t ever be forgotten or duplicated.
